Fire breaks out in Hortobágy

Local News

Reeds and other dry vegetation caught fire near the Western Main Canal on Tuesday evening, and the disaster management authorities also suspended train services on a section of the railway because of the blaze.

According to information from the Hungarian News Agency (MTI) on Wednesday morning, the fire was extinguished on the outskirts of Egyek, in the Hortobágyi National Park, where reeds, shrubs, bushes and scrubland caught fire across approximately 50 hectares. Firefighters brought the flames under control using four water jets, a water cannon and hand tools.

After no further open flames were detected, firefighting crews suspended the final clean-up operations early Wednesday morning due to poor visibility and difficult terrain, citing safety reasons. The work will resume during daylight hours.

The area is being monitored by two nature conservation rangers from Hortobágy National Park, the authorities added.
