The Kéretlen Figyelem Debreceni Nők Közéleti Egyesülete once again served hot meals to people living in difficult circumstances in Debrecen on Sunday, September 27. The association has been organizing food distributions on the last Sunday of every month since 2011.

People began gathering at Petőfi Square as early as an hour and a half before the event started. By 9:30 a.m., nearly 100 numbered tickets had been handed out, and in the end, a total of 160 people received stuffed cabbage, pastries and fresh bread.

According to the association, donations received through personal income tax contributions will allow them to help more people in the coming months.

Many families with children also attended the food distribution. The children received pizza and sweets as well. One of the association’s staff members asked a boy of around seven when he had last eaten chocolate. After thinking for a long time, the child replied:

“I don’t remember the last time I ate chocolate.”

His mother said that they could not afford chocolate and that the family had to think very carefully about how to spend their income. She also said that the government’s back-to-school allowance had meant a lot to them, but had not solved their everyday financial difficulties.

The association thanked the people of Debrecen who supported the food distribution with donations. Special thanks were given to Hajdúsági Sütödék Kft. and Szováti Kemencés Pékség, as well as to private individuals who regularly bring pizza, sweets and cakes for the children.

According to the organization, it has not received state or municipal funding in the past 15 years, and its food distributions are organized through its own resources and private donations.

The next food distribution will be held on Sunday, October 25, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Petőfi Square.

The association is primarily seeking donations of non-perishable food, fruit, potatoes, cooking oil and cleaning products, but it also accepts contributions from restaurants, bakeries and grocery stores in Debrecen.
