Bicycles can be carried free of charge on trains for one week, while next Tuesday passengers will be able to travel across the country for HUF 999, Dávid Vitézy said, outlining the discounts announced by the Ministry of Transport and Investment, which he heads, for this year’s European Mobility Week.

In a post on Facebook on Wednesday, Dávid Vitézy said the aim of the promotional week is to encourage as many people as possible to choose public transport. Therefore, between September 16 and 22, bicycles can be carried free of charge on trains available for intercity travel. Where a bicycle reservation is required, passengers will still need to obtain one, but it will also be free of charge.

A HUF 999 day pass will be introduced next Tuesday, on Car-Free Day

Vitézy added that the pass will allow unlimited travel for an entire day on intercity public transport throughout Hungary, with the same geographical validity as the Hungary24 day pass.

The day pass is not valid on local public transport, including in cities where county passes are otherwise accepted. The pass will cost HUF 999 through all sales channels, but any additional surcharges required for a particular service, such as a seat reservation, must be purchased separately, the minister said.

Vitézy said the discounts were introduced to demonstrate that public transport can be a genuine alternative to cars for many journeys.
