According to the latest data from 2025, men in Hungary marry at an average age of 37.2, while women marry at 34.3, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) said in a statement to the Hungarian news agency MTI on Friday.
These figures refer to all marriages.
The average age at first marriage is lower for both men and women: in 2025, men were an average of 33.3 years old when they married for the first time, while women were 30.7 years old.
In 1980, men were still an average of 24.5 years old and women 21.8 years old when they first got married. This means that since then, the age at first marriage has been postponed by 8.8 years for men and 8.9 years for women, the KSH added.
They went on to say that the average age of women at the birth of their first child was 29.47 years nationwide in 2025. By county, the figure was highest in Budapest (32.08 years) and lowest in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (26.15 years).
They also noted that in 2025, the regional hotspots for live births outside marriage continued to be northeastern Hungary and the Southern Transdanubian region. The proportion was particularly high in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, at 42 percent, while it was 35 percent in both Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Somogy counties.
According to the KSH, this stands in sharp contrast to the more traditional family patterns—or greater use of the family support system—in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Budapest, and the capital’s metropolitan area. The lowest proportions were recorded in Budapest (16.4 percent), as well as in Győr-Moson-Sopron and Pest counties (16.7 percent each), they wrote.
The KSH also reported that, among the counties, Zala has the oldest age structure. In 2025, there were 255 residents aged 65 or over for every 1,000 inhabitants. The ageing index was also highest there, at 211.2 percent, meaning that for every 100 children aged 0–14, there were more than 211 residents aged 65 or over. Zala’s figure was significantly higher than those of Békés County (185.3 percent), which ranked second, and Somogy County (184.9 percent).
In terms of infrastructure for elderly care, however, Békés County ranked first: in 2025, there were 553 places in residential care facilities for every 10,000 residents aged 65 or over.
They also pointed out that, along with the examples highlighted above, data for 73 indicators have been added to the KSH’s TIMEA Interactive Map Application. The update covers demographics, accidents, healthcare, social services, retail, earnings, housing, education, economic organizations, industry, and construction, they said.
