The Android and Impact bands gave a three-hour concert at Klinika Klub on Sunday evening. At the large-scale musical event, the audience heard not only iconic pieces from Debrecen’s progressive rock scene, but also legendary Hungarian and international hits performed in unique arrangements by bands featuring university lecturers and senior officials.
In the first part of the programme, Android performed the entire material from their latest album, Wordless Scriptum. The concert also marked the debut of the band’s new guitarist, Máté Szekanecz, who has joined the group with youthful energy. In the second part, Android selected some of its best-known songs, including classics such as Embergép, Éjféli bál and Verbunkos.
The band’s founder, a professor at the University of Debrecen’s Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, said the three-hour performance required serious mental preparation. In addition to managing the complex keyboard setup and numerous changes, performing such a diverse range of musical styles demanded a high level of concentration.
In the third part of the evening, Android – consisting of József Tőzsér on keyboards, Orbán Mező on drums, János Dudás on guitar and Zoltán Nikolin on bass – was joined by members of the Impact project, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. As always, the performance highlighted the unique musical collaboration between members and leaders of the university community.
During the anniversary set, the musicians performed their favourite rock classics, ranging from Deep Purple and Pink Floyd to Hungarian rock icons such as Omega and LGT. Zoltán Szilvássy, former rector of the University of Debrecen, took his place behind the drums, while László Szabó, Hungary’s former ambassador to Washington, contributed on guitar. As a special highlight of the evening, Rector Zoltán Bács also took to the stage and sang several songs for the audience.
