Happy International Gibbon Day

Local News

Ever since the Year of the Gibbon in 2015, October 24 marks International Gibbon Day, a worldwide event dedicated to raising public awareness of these singing acrobats and the importance of global conservation efforts. Gibbons are currently the most endangered ape family; threatened primarily by the rapid destruction of their endemic habitats in the tropical rainforests of South Asia, most species are either Endangered or Critically Endangered according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

We have been home to white-handed or lar gibbons (Hylobates lar) for almost 24 years under a European Endangered Species Program (EAZA EEP), with two brothers, Kópé and Marci, currently residing in our Gibbon House.

For this special occasion, we are hosting a mini-event in the Gibbon House at 11:00, including a feeding show and an educational talk about the history of gibbons at our Zoo as well as a couple fun facts about the species. All are welcome!
