Half of Hungarians attend festivals once or twice a year, with pop music and food festivals being the most popular, according to the latest online survey by Csodásmagyarország.hu.

In a statement sent to MTI on Tuesday, the organisation highlighted that two-thirds of respondents are willing to travel several hours within Hungary for a good festival.

Six percent of those surveyed attend festivals regularly throughout the year, while 3 percent only attend during the summer but do so several times. Meanwhile, 17 percent said they never attend such events.

Pop music festivals are the most popular among Hungarians

Twenty percent of respondents ranked pop music festivals as their favourite, while 15 percent preferred food festivals.

Wine and beer festivals, as well as cultural events, were each chosen by 12 percent of respondents. Nine percent preferred smaller local events, while craft and folk art festivals and large multi-day events were each selected by 7 percent. Family and multidisciplinary arts festivals each received 6 percent, while 4 percent chose special-interest themed events and just 2 percent named sustainable, green festivals as their favourite.

When choosing a festival, the lineup and programme are the most important factors, selected by 24 percent of respondents. Ticket prices were the deciding factor for 16 percent, while 15 percent based their choice on the location and 14 percent on the date.

Seven percent take available accommodation into account, 6 percent consider accessibility, while 5 percent each consider recommendations from friends and additional programmes. Safety and organisation were considered particularly important by 4 percent, while 3 percent said infrastructure influences their decision.

Festival trips are also often combined with other activities. Twenty-one percent of respondents combine festivals with sightseeing, while 19 percent use the opportunity to explore local attractions. Eighteen percent combine festival programmes with swimming or visiting spas, while 15 percent add hiking and nature activities to their trip.

Another 14 percent like to explore the local food scene, 10 percent also use wellness services, while only 3 percent said they do not usually combine festivals with any other activities.
