The government is preparing a three-day series of events for the August 20 national holiday, featuring a shorter-than-usual fireworks display, government spokesperson Éva Magyar said at a press event in Budapest on Tuesday presenting the programs. The event series will cost HUF 4 billion.

Éva Magyar said that programs will begin at some locations as early as August 19, while events will also be held at other venues in the days following the national holiday.

Ten venues will host events in Budapest

The locations will include Margaret Island, the Danube riverbank next to the Budapest University of Technology, Kossuth Square, the Parliament, Szabadság Square, Várkert Bazaar, Buda Castle, City Park, St. Stephen’s Square, and the Basilica.

On August 20, the programs will begin at 8 a.m. with the traditional flag-raising ceremony and the swearing-in of newly commissioned officers at Kossuth Square. This will be followed by a military and air parade, which can be viewed from the Danube embankments.
