Twelve hours after the death of Pope Francis, the Vatican released an official statement detailing the circumstances of the pontiff’s passing, as reported by Sky News.

According to the announcement, Pope Francis died as a result of a stroke, which led to a coma and subsequently irreversible heart failure. Based on the death certificate, his passing was unrelated to his earlier bout of pneumonia.

The Holy Father had long struggled with health issues: in his youth, one of his lungs was partially removed, and in the final years of his life, he lived with chronic lung disease. On February 14th, he was hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to severe respiratory difficulties and was treated for pneumonia. He spent 38 days in the facility before being discharged recently.

The day before his death, on Easter Sunday, he still appeared in public, personally blessing the faithful at St. Peter’s Square before thousands of people.

Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88, and news of his death has shaken the world—heads of state, religious leaders, and millions of believers are expressing their condolences to the Vatican and the Catholic Church.
