Native to the Far East, the Oriental garlic or Chinese leek (Allium tuberosum) is a medium-height perennial culinary and medicinal herb. It has slender stripe-shaped leaves with a distinctive and pleasant garlic-like scent and flavor, used for seasoning various Asian dishes such as soups, salads and dumplings.
In Europe, it is predominantly cultivated for ornamental purposes due to its tiny star-shaped flowers that form umbels, blooming from late summer to mid-autumn, and gorgeous fruits that outlast them by a good while.
Highly adaptive and drought-tolerant, the Oriental garlic prefers sunlit or semi-shade areas and, fortunately for those who do not own or have access to a garden, it does fine in a planter box or pot.
