On October 27, 2023, the mayor of Debrecen, László Papp, held a press conference on developments affecting the city’s key transport hubs.
Mayor László Papp said in the introduction: “The city’s most significant challenge is currently transportation.” As he added in the previous urban development program, one of the highlights of the new Főnix plan, and therefore an example that has been on the agenda since 2016, is transport development in Debrecen. Part of this long-planned program is the rebuilding of large intersections, the increase and development of the capacity of high-traffic roads, and the construction of roads implemented at the initiative of the public. These developments are clearly visible in the budget and in the agreements concluded with the government.
The mayor said that several calls for public procurement have appeared in recent days. Accordingly, in 2024, the development of five large hubs will start in Debrecen. In order to maintain the operability of the city’s traffic, these developments will be launched on schedule.
The first is the junction of Füredi út – Szabó Lőrinc utca – Csigekert utca, which is an absolutely necessary development element of the transport system in Debrecen because the Liget residential park’s access to the main artery of the city makes the renewal of the junction inevitable. Work on this can be expected to start in the second quarter of next year.
An important element of this route, which crosses Debrecen in an east-west direction, is the reconstruction of the intersection of Árpád tér – Rakovszky utca – Ótemető utca. László Papp highlighted that, since the expropriation procedures for the project did not stop last year, it is possible that construction can also start in this junction predictably – due to the scheduled implementation – during the summer vacation.
László Papp said that for people living along Böszörményi út and Vezér utca, the 33. – No. 354 connecting the main road, which is the northern bypass of the city. In addition to the construction of approximately 1.5 kilometers of new road, this enables the creation of a separate level junction. The mayor said about the development that there is currently extremely heavy traffic on Böszörményi út. The solution to this is that, on the one hand, the Józsa Northern Bypass Road provides a detour in the northern part of the city in the direction of the highway, and on the other hand, this project provides an alternative route with a separate level junction that connects the University Innovation Park, the production units of Deutsche Telekom and Thyssenkrupp in the city into the bloodstream, without touching the living area.
The city manager then spoke about the new location of the junction developments, the development of Szoboszlói út – Erzsébet utca – Külsővásártér. He added that this junction also handles significant traffic in Debrecen, so it is important to increase throughput. To solve this, an extra traffic lane will be created in front of the traffic light on the Szoboszlói út branch, and the grading lane will be extended on the section in front of the school.
As the next essential element, no. 48 László Papp mentioned the inland section of the main road. In this regard, he said in the introduction that the expansion of the main road to a 2×2 lane will be realized by the end of the decade as part of the Debrecen 2030 program. The first and most urgent step of this is the capacity-increasing reconstruction of the Vámospércsi út – Hétvezér utca – Budai Nagy Antal utca – Faraktár utca intersection in the city section. In this case, planning is complicated by the process of expropriation procedures and the fact that a high-voltage line also touches this node.
In addition, the city launched a number of other developments together with the Ministry of Construction and Transport. At the working group meeting held last week, the parties reviewed the developments in Debrecen, from which it is clear that the main focus of urban development in the next three years will be transport development. As an example, László Papp mentioned the implementation of long-awaited developments such as the construction of the eastern bypass, which represents a 20-kilometer new road section. In addition, increasing the throughput of overpasses is a key issue. In this regard, the reconstruction of the Vágóhíd utca overpass is one of the most urgent tasks. Careful planning makes it possible for a new bridge to be built next to the current one during the Debrecen – Nyíregyháza railway development. The old overpass will then be demolished, followed by the construction of a new 2×2 lane traffic on Vágóhíd Street.
The city manager concluded his presentation by saying that by the end of the decade – that is, by the end of the Debrecen 2030 program – quality and safety will be a long-term guarantee for the city’s transport development. This is due to the strong and persistent lobbying carried out by the city administration in recent years, despite the fact that recent years have not been particularly favorable for investments due to the epidemic situation, the war and the effects of inflation. Regarding the current situation, it can be said that the developments in Debrecen have not stopped, in fact, they stepped on the gas pedal in 2023, which means a more intensive development process that serves the lives of the city’s population even more.

In the interior of the city of Debrecen, no. 4 the establishment of a 60 m long right-turning lane at the Rakovszky utca – Ótemető utca junction on the main road, as well as the establishment of a 77 m long right-turning lane at the Debrecen, Árpádi tér (Kassai úti) junction, the layout, elevation and cross-section design of the facilities with road accessories and final traffic engineering design, traffic control coordination with traffic lights. The reconstruction of junctions is densely interwoven with public utilities due to the metropolitan environment. Due to the space requirements of the independent right-turning lanes, the supporting columns of the trolley overhead line network must be moved over the entire intervention section.

Reconstruction of the Balmazújvárosi út / Füredi út – Csigekert utca – Szabó Lőrinc utca intersection
The Government of the 1301/2023. (VII.19.) The government decided to conduct the public procurement procedure for the project and ordered the Ministry of Construction and Transportation to implement the project.

In order to handle the dynamically growing traffic faster, the task is to rebuild the existing vehicle classification junction controlled by a traffic light signaling device at Balmazújvárosi út – Füredi út – Csigekert utca – Szabó Lőrinc utca in the interior of the city of Debrecen. No. 33 independent right- and left-turn lanes will be created on the branches of the main road, an independent left-turn lane on Csigekert utca, and independent double left-turn lanes on Szabó Lőrinc utca, and in connection with the intersection, no. 33 pavement reinforcement of the main road section between sections 106+360 – 106+828 km.
On Szabó Lőrinc utca, the missing, approximately 120 m long cycle path section will be built together with the connection to the existing Füredi út cycle path. Furthermore, for the sake of the accessibility of the properties located on Lőrinc Szabó Street, a service road approximately 200 m long must be built along the section affected by the development.

No. 354 Implementation of a new, 2×1-lane, approximately 1.5 km long suburban road section between the main road and Vezér Street managed by the City of Debrecen County, as part of which the 354 no. it is necessary to establish 1 new, separate level junction in the vicinity of the 2+700 km section of the main road.
The starting section of the intervention is the 0+453.75 km section of the project named “Development of the Debrecen Agricultural Innovation Industrial Park”. The road to be implemented continues in a northerly direction, connecting to road no. 354. Debrecen’s northern bypass to the first class main road, over which it will be crossed with the construction of a bridge structure.
No. 354 Junction branches will be created for those coming from the main road, which will allow them to access the new road section through the separate level crossing.
