Billy Idol will return to Hungary on July 8. The popular rock singer of the ’80s and ’90s will perform at Budapest Park as part of his It’s a Nice Day to… Tour Again (following his 2018 and 2022 tours), as announced by the event organizer Live Nation on Tuesday, in a statement to MTI.
Billy Idol, born William Michael Albert Broad in 1955 in Stanmore, England, first gained attention with his band Bromley Contingent, where he played alongside future members of The Clash and Siouxsie and the Banshees.
In the late ’70s, he played in well-known punk bands of the era, including Chelsea and Generation X, before moving to New York to start his solo career.
His debut solo album, Billy Idol, was released in 1982, followed by Rebel Yell a year later. To date, he has released eight studio albums. His name is associated with hits such as Mony Mony, Dancing With Myself, Cradle of Love, Rebel Yell, White Wedding, and Shock to the System. In the ’80s and ’90s, his music videos made him one of MTV’s biggest stars.
The singer, guitarist, and songwriter gained attention in the mid-’90s for his experimental electronic album Cyberpunk (1993), but after that, he was more known for his motorcycle accidents, troubled personal life, and health issues than for new music.
He made a comeback in 2005 with Devil’s Playground, and after releasing a holiday album, Happy Holidays, he took another long break from new material. His most recent album, Kings & Queens of the Underground (2014), was produced by Trevor Horn, who had worked with Paul McCartney and Frankie Goes to Hollywood and was also a member of the band Yes. That year, he also published his autobiography, Dancing With Myself.
Billy Idol, who will celebrate his 70th birthday this November, performed at the Sopron VOLT Festival in 2010 and at Petőfi Csarnok in 2006.
