On the anniversary of his death, the University of Debrecen commemorated the former Minister of Religion and Public Education Kunó Klebelsberg at the statue in front of the Main Building. At the ceremony, in addition to the institution, the armed bodies, representatives of local and national organizations laid flowers of remembrance.

When I look through the people who are standing here now, two things come to mind: honor and fairness. If we look back at Kunó Klebelsberg’s life, the same words come to mind. It is a great thing that we can pay tribute here to a man who has served his country with honor and respect. This was important then and still is in a changing world. After the change of university model, the University of Debrecen will continue its work, which will always be here, as higher education has been continuously present in Debrecen since 1538

– said Ákos Pintér, the general rector of the institution.

The commemoration continued with a solemn speech by György Kossa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, at the Klebelsberg statue on University Square.

– I greet all those who came to bow their heads in memory of one of the greatest Hungarian statesmen and patriots of the 20th century. During the career of Kunó Klebelsberg, after many of his serious positions under the Tisza government, he reached the pinnacle of politics as a result, when under the Bethlen governments he became first Minister of the Interior and then Minister of Religion and Public Education. His public education policy was characterized by the creation of a unified, but divided into three branches, the legalization of the civic school as an independent secondary school, the reform of secondary school education and teacher training, the speaker emphasized.

Thought, feeling, deed, sacrifice — these were the stars of the controller in his life. The guiding principle of his policy was that the development of culture was the starting point for saving the nation,

– György Kossa emphasized.

– He planned a lot and achieved a lot. Because he was not a man of words, but a man of deeds… He was well aware that education, research, culture, solidarity, cooperation, and work were the foundation of the ascension of a society. He has done his utmost to this end, as during his work he has created legislation that has made it possible to have sufficient resources, infrastructure and human resources to achieve this goal. He took an active part in the organization and structure of the universities of Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs. He was a real statesman and a patriot, who was inaugurated as an honorary doctor of the University of Debrecen in 1927. A patriot who, selflessly, with his enormous work ethic, carried out his noble mission to raise the Hungarian nation along the lines of culture, knowledge, solidarity, and cooperation.

Descendants have a duty to bow their heads over these activities. Preserve your memory and respect your human greatness,

– concluded the chairman of the board of trustees.

The commemoration ended with the Wreath after the wreath in the performance of the Local Guard Orchestra, and then ended with the sounds of Il Silencio at the statue of Kunó Klebelsberg, former Minister of Religion and Public Education, in the square in front of the University of Debrecen.
