With his gold medal, Liu Shaoang, a student of sports organization at the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Economics, achieved success in sports history at the Beijing Five-Ring Games. The Olympic champion of the 500-meter race was also greeted by the delegation of the institution upon his return home.
Our short-track speed skaters returned home to Budapest on Friday, February 18th. At the invitation of the Hungarian National Skating Association, a six-member delegation from the University of Debrecen greeted Liu Shaoang with gold and two bronze medals at the Practice Ice Rink, who became one of the most successful competitors in Beijing. The student of the University of Debrecen won Hungary’s first individual Olympic championship in the history of the Winter Olympics.
The triumphant excellence at 500 meters won the Olympic gold in 40,338 seconds, as well as a bronze medal at 1,000 meters and as a member of the mixed relay. The three medals meant the best performance in Hungary at the Winter Olympics so far. The 23-year-old athlete is also a member of the mentoring program of the University of Debrecen, in which, in addition to the sports scholarship, students and instructors help elite athletes both in their studies and in their competitions.
