“In this exhibition, I explore the fragile boundary between reality and illusion — between what is true and what merely appears to be. In our modern world, these lines have become so blurred that we often lose our sense of certainty. We no longer know what we can trust: not images, not conversations, not even the presence of others. It is as if we are floating in a world without solid ground. My paintings reflect this tension. The simple line-drawn figures and the blurred, painted forms symbolize this duality. I leave it to each viewer to decide which is real, which is false, or whether both exist in a different, uncertain dimension.”
BIO
Virág Vida was born in Debrecen in November 1977, exactly one hundred years after the birth of Endre Ady (November 1877), and has been living and creating in Los Angeles for more than a decade. After attending the Debrecen Reformed College, she continued her studies at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen, majoring in Hungarian literature and art history, where she founded the LÉK Literary Self-Education Circle, which has been active for twenty years. In 2002, she graduated from the university with a rector’s award.
Following her postgraduate studies in dance and drama at DRTKF, she also earned a degree from the Hungarian Dance Academy, where she studied choreography and modern dance. She founded the Koré Company modern dance ensemble in Debrecen, which was recently revived in Los Angeles.
She began drawing at the age of four under two Debrecen artist-teachers, first Dénes Pállfy and later István Tamus, at what was then the Kölcsey Center. She has received awards from numerous international drawing competitions and was a regular participant in the Zánka fine arts camps. Her first solo exhibition was in high school, followed by shows at the university gallery during her college years. In 2015 and 2018, she held solo exhibitions in Budapest. She has illustrated two books, and her work has also appeared in a volume by writer Orsolya Karafiáth. Virág Vida works as a cultural journalist reporting from Hollywood for the Hungarian press.
