It is important for the Balkan region to become an integral part of Europe beyond just its membership in the Council of Europe, Fidesz MEP László Trócsányi said on Friday.

Addressing the “Europe Day 2021” online conference organised by the National University of Public Service, Trócsányi noted that the continent currently celebrates two Europe Days: one observed on May 5 by the Council of Europe and one on May 9 by the European Union. Trócsányi said the CoE was the larger of the two organisations, with the total population of its member states being 830 million people. “The unfortunate thing when it comes to Europe Day is that we can’t speak of full European unity,” Trócsányi said. “There are regions whose accession needs to be supported. Tibor Navracsics, director of the university’s European Strategy Research Institute, said the EU should comprise a community of Europeans in which most decisions are made by member states rather than institutions.
