Meet the Zoo’s White Peacocks!

Culture Local News
With the upcoming holiday in mind, every day up until the first day of Christmas we will be introducing one of our residents awaiting your support, among whom you are sure to find your favorite.

A member of the pheasant family, the blue or Indian peacock (Pavo cristatus) and its color presented in today’s post, the white peacock, are native to the woodlands of the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. This year, a lot of our zoo campers got to know our white peacocks, as the camp headquarter is right next to their enclosure. Towards the end of summer, many lucky visitors left with special souvenirs as the moulting season arrived. Peacocks were pretty generous with such gifts since a male peacock can have up to 200 tail feathers.
Due to their great beauty and feather patterns called peacock eyes, these birds are considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Peacocks were first introduced to Europe as a result of the conquests of Alexander the Great, and nowadays people keep them all over the world.
Although protected by both the law and their role in local culture, peacocks are still constantly threatened by illegal hunting for their meat, so they are on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List. In addition to white peacocks, visitors can also meet blue peacocks here.
Like our white peacocks, a lot of our residents are yet to be adopted. If you want to make them really happy while also offering us tremendous help, please consider becoming a zoo foster parent.
An Annual Zoo Pass can also be a wonderful Christmas present and a year-round source of joy. More tips on gifts and how to support us at: www.zoodebrecen.hu/content/supportus.html
