Univer Product Zrt. recalls baby food labelled “broccoli soup with chicken meat from 8 months of age” because of a food safety risk related to one ingredient.Univer Product Zrt. announced on Wednesday (30th of May) that they had decided to recall one of their baby food products because there is a health risk related to one ingredient. The company initiated an investigation after NÉBIH’s warning had been issued because of the alkaloid content of spice constituents in some food products. The investigation showed the presence of atropine from a foreign plant in excess of acceptable levels in cumin. Univer has immediately recalled their 163 gram baby food products and they asked their costumers not to use the baby food labelled “broccoli soup with chicken meat from 8 months of age”.

Tropane alkaloids are toxic substances of some plants that can be found in every part of a plant, for example in their seeds. Tropane alkaloids – eaten in larger amounts – can influence the central nervous system and the vegetative nervous system. They can also cause dry mouth, pupil dilation and other neurological symptoms.

NÉBIH found contaminated cumin in food products many times in the past several months and they recalled them immediately.
