Firefighters have already been alerted to more than a hundred locations across the country on Sunday morning due to stormy winds. In the morning, churches, dormitories and hotels were damaged by the wind, and the wind in Komárom-Esztergom County raised half-meter snow barriers, the National Directorate General for Disaster Management (OKF) announced in a statement.
Firefighters were called mainly due to fallen trees, torn branches and wires, most reports came from Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Fejér, Somogy, Veszprém and Zala counties.
The National Meteorological Service issued weather alerts in several areas due to stormy winds and snowing, warned Major Imre Dóka, a deputy spokesman for OKF.
Disaster management asks everyone to pay attention to the alerts of the meteorological service, find out about the road conditions before setting off, and proceed with caution in stormy winds. And if they see a person in trouble, or a damaged utility, report it to 112.
Imre Dóka also announced at noon on Sunday that the wind had damaged the roof of a hotel in Kossuth Lajos street in Hévíz, the roof structure of a church in Érd, Kálvin square, the roof of the dormitory in Álmos vezér street in Kaposvár had been demolished by six firefighters.
Christmas trees in Kaposvár, Nyíregyháza and Baja have also fallen due to the strong wind.
In Komárom-Esztergom county, between Bana and Ács, the snowdrift raised half-meter barriers, and several cars got stuck. On the M1 motorway near Győr, a tree fell on the stop lane. Firefighters also had to remove a large tree that had fallen on a road on Poroszló on the main road 33. On the main road 48 at Debrecen, it was necessary to intervene due to thirty meters of fallen wood. Due to the extraordinary weather, the Old Town Square market in Veszprém, organized with the support of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture (ECOC) program, was canceled because the stormy wind destroyed the tents on Sunday morning, the organizers said on the community’s website. Due to the strong winds, the “flea market” of the Bakony county seat on Sundays was also delayed.
