Local News

Last year, they made the outdoor events almost unbearable, this year, however, they are nowhere to be seen.

Due to the spring drought, the number of insects has diminished. Though rain is conducive to larval development, it needed in spring. But rain was so scant this spring that the mosquito invasion is likely to fall off. “Unlike in previous years, very little rain fell this spring. Most types of mosquitoes lay their eggs on the soil and they hatch when a body of water covers them. These standing waters were missing this year.” –university lecturer László József Szabó explained. If persistent rain comes, the situation may change drastically because the standing waters and the puddles will make the eggs hatch.
The municipality decides about mosquito control depending on the number of mosquitoes. In the previous years, a spraying was ordered in case the expert who was entrusted to monitor the reproduction of mosquitoes counted more than 50 bites in one hour. This year, the first spraying will be done probably in mid-August, before the Flower Carnival. Later, one extra spraying will be ordered if necessary. The municipality has put aside 18 million HUF for the two spraying.
