Carnival season starts on 11 January

Culture Local News

The Carnival season, also known as “farsang” in Hungary, starts this Saturday in Debrecen.

According to the traditions, farsang starts on 6 January, which is the beginning of Epiphany and lasts until Ash Wednesday. Parades, masquerades and other forms of revelry that had their origins in pre-Christian pagan rites accompany the Carnival season.

The last day of the season is Shrove Tuesday that precedes Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. This day is called the “tail of farsang”, when the Carnival season ends and people say goodbye to the winter period.
