Red-and-green Macaws hatched again

Local News

After last year’s breeding success, today we are happy to announce the arrival of two Red-and-green Macaws (Ara chloropterus), an addition to the largest flock – eleven specimen – of Macaw species ever held at the Zoo.

Fledged on July 10, the two birdie are yet to be sexed. The hand-reared chicks are healthy and they have good appetite and our zookeepers are doing their best to nurture them.

Our visitors can enjoy the nearness of the Macaws at the Animals in Action Experience or simply bumping into a keeper with one of the birds on their shoulder. Macaws will amaze you with their enchanting intelligence, playfulness and talent.

These king-sized members of the parrot family are living in South America and due to ongoing habitat loss and extreme volume of illegal trade, both species are listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
