Debrecen Mayor Papp László announced on November 8, 2024, that the city will be able to host internationally renowned music acts thanks to a new Light Music Community Cultural Center to be built at Dósa nádor tér.
“The past five years have been primarily focused on developing facilities for more serious, high-brow cultural pursuits,” said Mayor Papp László. “We’ve invested heavily in theaters like the Csokonai Fórum and the renovated Csokonai Teátrum. However, we believe it’s important to cater to all aspects of city life, including culture.”
He emphasized the need for cultural centers that bridge different genres and generations, especially considering the growing popularity of music education in the city, thanks to programs offered by the University of Debrecen and the city’s rich musical heritage. The mayor highlighted that the city is investing in infrastructure to attract world-class music acts.
“There are very few high-quality music clubs or cultural centers outside of Budapest that can accommodate not only domestic music stars but also international bands and performers,” said Mayor Papp László. “With the Dósa nádor tér Light Music Community Cultural Center, we aim to fill this gap in our city’s cultural scene.”
He added that the development will specifically aim to recreate the atmosphere of music clubs and cater to the entertainment needs of the city’s younger population.
“Debrecen is undergoing a transformation, and this is evident in all areas of life, including culture. We want Debrecen to have some of the best clubs in Hungary, and by doing so, we can also support and promote local talent,” emphasized Papp László. He added that the city has asked bidders to include performance halls, catering facilities, and accommodation in their proposals.
Out of 23 submissions, a jury of experts selected the winning design. The winning design best integrated into the existing urban fabric of the city center and considered the needs of neighboring residents.
