In January, employees of a shop in Debrecen noticed a strange sound coming from an unused chimney. A tiny kitten, only a few weeks old, had become trapped inside and had been meowing pitifully for days.
Firefighters reached the kitten by partially dismantling the chimney. The exhausted and freezing animal was lifted out from the rubble by Fire Sergeant Dávid Csecsődi, who shortly afterwards returned to the Debrecen fire station with the palm-sized kitten in his lap. After finishing his shift, he took the little cat home.
The firefighter named the kitten Pernye (which means “Soot”) and adopted her. He has been caring for her ever since and watching her grow, and despite her mischievous behavior, he cannot be angry with her. Pernye chews up everything she can get her paws on and loves to scratch — but it is impossible to stay mad at her. According to her rescuer, she is a real little devil from the chimney!
