The Debrecen Appeals Chief Prosecutor’s Office has successfully pushed for a harsher sentence against a man who abused his wife for more than ten years and endangered their children.
According to the ruling, the woman and the defendant lived in a village in the Nyírség region, where they raised three children together. Over time, the man increasingly abused his wife verbally and physically, attempting to isolate her from her family. He also subjected her to repeated sexual abuse. Both the wife and the children were humiliated, insulted, and physically assaulted. The children were often forced to work around the house or in the fields, sometimes under the scorching sun, and frequently witnessed their father beating their mother.
Eventually, the woman fled with her children, finding refuge in a safe house. She filed a police report and initiated divorce proceedings.
The Nyíregyháza District Court initially sentenced the defendant to six months in prison, suspended for one year on probation, for two counts of domestic violence and two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence, while acquitting him on other charges.
Following the prosecution’s appeal, the Nyíregyháza Regional Court confirmed his guilt for repeated sexual coercion and three counts of endangering minors, increasing the sentence to three years in prison.
However, the prosecution deemed this still insufficient given the severity and duration of the crimes and appealed for further increase.
The Debrecen Court of Appeal agreed with the prosecution, ruling that the defendant should serve four years in prison and be barred from holding public office for four years. The court also determined that he is ineligible for parole. The decision is now final.
