National University

Twenty thousand Japanese books have been donated to Hungarian institutions to mark the 150th anniversary of Japan and Hungary establishing diplomatic relations, the organiser of the donation scheme, Sandy Juhász, said.

The Pécs University of Science library and knowledge centre has received 250 volumes of the donated books collected in Kagoshima Prefecture, in south-west Japan, she said at an event in Pécs. Juhász added that never before had Japanese literature come to Hungary in such great volume.

The Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church will receive 5,000 books, the bulk of the donation, she said. The books collected in cooperation by Japanese and Hungarian volunteers are being distributed among educational institutions, libraries and Japanese-owned companies in Hungary, she said.

Barnabás Füzes, strategic and innovation deputy director at the Pécs University of Science library and knowledge centre, said that the books would help Japanese language teaching at the university and also serve Japanese students studying in Pécs.
