Modernization of the main intersection on Road 33 in Debrecen begins

Local News

As part of an investment by the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM), construction work begins on April 22, 2025, at one of Debrecen’s busiest intersections, where Road 33 (Balmazújvárosi Road), Füredi Road, Csigekert Street, and Szabó Lőrinc Street meet. The works are being carried out by a consortium of Debreceni Mélyépítő Holding Ltd. and “KE-VÍZ 21” Zrt., starting with the installation of temporary traffic signs.

Phase one, beginning April 22, will see the closure of the Csigekert and Szabó Lőrinc branches of the junction. Two-way traffic will continue on Füredi Road and Balmazújvárosi Road with one lane in each direction. The traffic lights will be turned off, and temporary bus stops and pedestrian crossings with signal control will be installed.

At the same time, to accommodate local residents, one-way traffic rules will be introduced:

  • On Csata Street, heading toward Csigekert Street

  • On Bölcs Street (from No. 35) toward Csigekert Street

  • On József Attila Street, heading toward Böszörményi Road

Alternative routes during the closures:

  • Szabó Lőrinc Street can be bypassed via:

    • Akadémia Street – Böszörményi Road (Route 35)

    • Károli Gáspár Street – Vezér Street – Böszörményi Road

    • Károli Gáspár Street – Vezér Street – Domokos Márton Street – Balmazújvárosi Road (Road 33)

    • A 240-meter-long temporary stabilized road connecting Karinthy Frigyes Street to the “Decathlon” roundabout

  • Csigekert Street can be bypassed via:

    • Bartók Béla Road – Pesti Street (Route 35)

    • Bartók Béla Road – Köntösgát Row – Balmazújvárosi Road (Road 33)

Bus route 14/14Y will continue to operate along its original route (Tessedik Sámuel Street – Szabó Lőrinc Street – left onto Akadémia Street – right onto Böszörményi Road – right onto Bartók Béla Road – turn at the roundabout – Bartók Béla Road). Further updates and changes can be found on the DKV Zrt. website: www.dkv.hu.

This temporary traffic arrangement is expected to remain in place from April 22 until November 2025. Demolition works will start on April 28, with overall completion scheduled for July 2026.

Key elements of the development:

  • The current four lanes on the main road will be expanded to six lanes.

  • Csigekert Street will expand from two to four lanes, and Szabó Lőrinc Street from two to five.

  • A 786-meter section of Road 33 will receive full resurfacing, along with 156 meters on Csigekert Street and 113 meters on Szabó Lőrinc Street.

  • Sidewalks and bicycle paths along Road 33 will be refurbished, and a new pedestrian and bicycle path will be constructed along Szabó Lőrinc Street, directly connecting to the city’s existing bike path network.

  • Significant utility relocation is also planned during the works.
