National

A new gene have been identified by Hungarian scientists which probably contributes to the development of a rare neurological disorder.Affected patients experience muscular weakness, muscular dystrophy and equilibrium, and it also turned out that their children have symptoms of autism or schizophrenia.

Hungarian scientists carried out a special genetic analysis since out of the 22,000 human genes we know only about 3500 that can cause certain diseases. There was no genetic defect in these 3500 genes, so the analysis had to be continued.

According to Anikó Gál, member of the research team, with the help of a scholarship program, functional tests were carried out in the United States, Philadelphia, in the György Hanócky Laboratory.

Evetually, the analysis revealed the defect of the gene called MSTO1.
