The Debrecen Appeal Prosecutor has requested that the verdict be upheld against the man who killed and then robbed his minor cousin.
According to the ruling, the 21-year-old defendant, with a prior criminal record, met his 17-year-old relative in a pub on May 13, 2024. They agreed to go to a neighboring town to buy “crystal” (drugs). For this purpose, the victim handed the defendant the 2,000 forints he had. On the way, they argued, and the dispute escalated into physical violence. The young boy pushed the defendant in the chest, to which the defendant responded by assaulting the victim, causing him to collapse to the ground. The defendant then removed the victim’s shirt and dragged him under a tree, where he continued the assault.
The defendant stole the victim’s clothes and mobile phone, which he later sold to buy drugs for himself. As a result of the assault, the minor victim died at the scene.
The Nyíregyháza Court sentenced the defendant, as a repeat offender, to life imprisonment and 10 years’ ban from public affairs for murder committed with base motives and extreme cruelty, robbery, and possession of drugs. It was determined that the defendant may become eligible for parole no earlier than 25 years.
The defendant appealed for a reduced sentence, while his lawyer appealed primarily for a different factual and legal classification, and secondarily for a lighter sentence.
The Debrecen Appeal Prosecutor maintains that the court’s decision is lawful and justified. The defendant relentlessly abused his young cousin even when he was already helpless on the ground. Due to the extreme inhumanity of his actions, the life sentence is proportionate, and there is no legal basis for mitigation.
The Debrecen Court of Appeal will decide on the case in the second instance.
