Debrecen’s young talents honored

On June 26, 2025, at the Old Town Hall, the Kölcsey Ferenc Scholarship, the Béla Békessy Sports Scholarships, and the Cívis Talentum Scholarships were awarded. The recipients received their awards from Deputy Mayor István Puskás.

The Kölcsey Ferenc Scholarship, established in 2006 by the General Assembly of the Municipality of Debrecen, is granted to individuals or legal entities active in the cultural field. Its aim is to encourage the creation of valuable works about Debrecen that strengthen local identity and citizens’ sense of belonging — the city leadership reminded in its statement.

In 2025, the award was given to Tamás Vékony, a painter. His winning proposal involves creating a community mural on the wall of the Batthyány Street passage, based on a 1968 linocut print. The original print was inspired by the vibrant world of 1960s Batthyány Street, featuring places like the Ludas Café, the Hapák photo studio, and the Kerékgyártó gingerbread shop. The project is especially timely as 2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of János Józsa, one of Debrecen’s most distinctive visual artists, who captured the city’s past, streets, characters, and moods in his graphics and paintings, leaving a rich visual legacy.

The Béla Békessy Sports Scholarship, established in 2016 by the Municipality of Debrecen, aims to support successful participation in international sports competitions. It is awarded to amateur or professional athletes, competing individually or in teams, in Debrecen-based sports clubs, who have achieved outstanding results at events such as the Olympics, Paralympics, World Games, World Championships, World Cups, or European Championships.

This year, the city awarded the Béla Békessy Sports Scholarship to:

Attila Csaba Arany (athletics)

Viktória Bányász (aerobics)

Sugár Katinka Battai (fencing)

Gergő Dobi (triathlon)

Dániel Göttlinger (wheelchair fencing)

Nóra Komjáthi (boxing)

Luca Kozák (athletics)

Blanka Virág Nagy (fencing)

Petra Senánszky (swimming, finswimming)

Sára Suba (finswimming)

The Cívis Talentum Scholarship, also established in 2016, supports participation in international academic competitions. It is awarded to talented high school students studying in Debrecen who, alongside their school studies, compete in international contests in fields such as humanities, science, foreign languages, the arts, IT, or vocational education, and who demonstrate exemplary performance to their peers.

This year, the city awarded the Cívis Talentum Scholarship to:

Júlia Baran (Fazekas Mihály Secondary School)

Noémi Bodor (Fazekas Mihály Secondary School)

Árpád Csegény (University of Debrecen’s Kossuth Lajos Secondary and Primary School)

Marcell Jurácsik (Fazekas Mihály Secondary School)

Dóra Lesku (Tóth Árpád Secondary School)
