Mythical Beauties at the Zoo’s Scent Garden

Culture Local News

A genus within the amaryllis family, daffodils (Narcissus) are known as the heralds of spring, cultivated by Ancient Greeks for their fragrant oil. The scientific name Narcissus derives from the Greek mythological figure of the same name who falls in love with his own reflection as well as the Greek word for “narcotic” or “intoxicating” – the leaves and bulbs do indeed contain toxic alkaloids.

Daffodils are perennial bulbous plants with countless cultivars, including ones with a short habit and small flowers, or a tall habit and plump flowers, with colors ranging from white to yellow. After the blooming season, green parts will dry our and should be removed. Fine additions to any garden, daffodils can also serve as a touch of spring as cut flowers or planted in pots indoors.

Come test your senses on our daffodils in the Scent Garden after we reopen.
