Hungary’s Kabul Evacuations ‘Nearing End’

Global
Hungary’s evacuation mission in Afghanistan is “nearing its end”, the foreign minister said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference held on a different subject, Péter Szijjártó said the end of the mission will be announced by the commander of the Hungarian Armed Forces. Hungary has evacuated some 500 people so far, Szijjártó said. Besides Hungarian citizens, Hungary has also helped locals and their families who worked with the Hungarian mission in Afghanistan, and complied with US and Russian requests of cooperation, the minister said. Hungary does not wish to participate in the redistribution of refugees in any other way, he added.

Meanwhile, the interior ministry said that a convoy carrying Afghan refugees who fled Taliban retribution because they cooperated with Hungary in Afghanistan had left the Liszt Ferenc International Airport for the migrant facilities in Röszke and Tompa in southern Hungary. Altogether 114 adults and 126 children will be held in quarantine at the immigration office’s facilities, the ministry said. The state will provide them with food and shelter and they will also receive basic health and hygiene packages and clothing, it added.
