Lecturers and researchers of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TTK) at the University of Debrecen received their appointments as associate professors, institute directors and heads of departments at a ceremonial event on Friday. The appointments were handed over by Dean Ferenc Kun.
In his opening speech, Dean Ferenc Kun emphasized that one of the faculty’s greatest strengths lies in the diversity of its scientific fields, with its educational and research portfolio ranging from classical natural sciences to modern engineering disciplines.
“Another great strength of ours is that here, science truly serves technology and provides the foundation for future engineering solutions. Our scientific excellence is clearly reflected in the fact that six organizational units of the faculty have been awarded the prestigious ‘Excellent Research Institution’ title by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Currently, ten research groups operate under the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network at our faculty, along with five Lendület and two Élvonal research groups. These are outstanding achievements even on a national scale. As Hungary’s top higher education institution, the University of Debrecen ranked 563rd on the latest Quacquarelli Symonds list, and our faculty played a significant role in this achievement. World-class research forms the basis for world-class education. As a higher education institution, our primary mission is to educate natural scientists, teachers and engineers for the broader social and economic environment.”
– the dean said, adding that in order to ensure the continued development of high-quality teaching and research, the faculty needs leaders who are not only outstanding in their fields but are also ready to take responsibility for their communities and are committed to working for the future of the faculty.
The dean also welcomed those promoted to associate professor, highlighting that this promotion is a defining milestone in any academic career. He noted that the appointment is not only a recognition of past achievements but also an expression of trust and expectations for the future, as the success of the faculty’s institutes largely depends on its leading educators.
At the end of June, the mandates of 21 heads of organizational units expired, including four institute directors and seventeen department heads. In several cases, the previous leaders stepped down from their positions, and their work was specifically acknowledged by the dean, recognizing their contributions to the faculty’s development.
During the ceremony, the new institute directors and department heads also received their appointments. The dean emphasized that the multi-stage evaluation process for leadership applications serves not only to assess professional competence but also to strengthen community trust. All the newly appointed leaders begin—or continue—their leadership work with broad support.
The dean congratulated all appointees and assured them of the continued support of the faculty’s leadership.
