An agreement has been reached to establish a space industry network with the participation of the University of Debrecen, eight other universities, two ministries, and the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network. The cooperation for the partnership, called the Hungarian Spacelab Network, was officially signed on Monday in Budapest by László Csernoch, Vice-Rector for Science at the University of Debrecen.

“The research, educational, and scientific excellence of a country is reflected in how active it is in the space industry, space research, and space sciences. In recent years, we have made significant progress,”
said Balázs Hankó, Minister for Culture and Innovation, in his opening remarks.

According to Hankó, Hungarian universities have launched significant cooperation within the UniSpace program, which involves not only space pharmacology and space medicine but also fields such as food sciences and engineering. The Spacelab Network represents excellent research cooperation, further advancing and continuing the results prepared, among others, by astronaut Tibor Kapu’s experiments.

“The HUNOR program was true teamwork, with internationally recognized results, and it has become a historic, nation-uniting mission,”
stated Orsolya Ferencz at the signing ceremony.

The Ministerial Commissioner responsible for space research called the opportunities opened up by HUNOR enormous, especially highlighting the establishment of the scientific laboratory network.

“The Hungarian Spacelab Network brings together those universities that actively participated in the HUNOR program and invested significant efforts. The creation of this space industry network provides an opportunity for the scientific projects carried out within the University of Debrecen’s Space Research Program (DE-Space) to further develop and reach their full potential through this partnership,”
emphasized László Csernoch, Vice-Rector for Science at the University of Debrecen.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, the University of Debrecen, the University of Miskolc, Eötvös Loránd University, the University of Pécs, Óbuda University, Széchenyi István University, Semmelweis University, the University of Szeged, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, as well as the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, aim to establish a space industry network that fosters innovation and sustainable development. This network will strengthen Hungary’s role in international space research and develop the necessary knowledge and infrastructure to support these efforts.
